Goodness

This past week I watched the Kindness Diaries on Netflix. Normally I’m not one to talk about TV shows, but this is one I highly recommend. The series follows a man traveling around the world relaying solely on the kindness of strangers. It left me thinking about the the ways kindness and goodness are outward expressions of the Spirit who indwells us with these characteristics.

One thing that struck me about this show was that most of the people who showed kindness to a complete stranger traveling around the world, did so because of the faith and beliefs within them. Many people shared stories about how they were raised to treat people with kindness, and do good to others.

Goodness comes from the nature of our being. It’s an expression as diverse as the Spirit is creative. Goodness can be seen in a variety of ways - caring for the poor, visiting the sick, providing for loved ones, volunteering to clean up from a disaster, helping at an animal shelter, and the list can go on. A life of goodness is characterized by a desire to be a blessing to others, without the expectation of receiving anything in return.

How does goodness express itself in your life? In what ways does this characteristic of the Spirit emerge in your life?

Take a moment to close your eyes, relax your body, and pray this breath prayer with me. As you inhale pray: Fill me with your goodness. As you exhale prayer: that I may be a blessing.

As you meditate on this prayer, ask the Lord what goodness looks like in your life, and what are the ways you can be a blessing to others.
